Canvas belts are best paired with chinos, cords, or moleskin trousers. These belts come in either striped or plain designs. Canvas belts should not be worn with formal wear. Additionally, be careful that their colors go well with your shirt and trousers, and do not clash with strikingly patterned socks. Both leather and canvas belts should be color coordinated with your shoes.

Plaited belts are an attractive alternative to smooth leather belts and can be worn with leisurewear, with a suit, or with the combination of a sports jacket and trousers. However, you should make sure that the rather rustic look of such belt doesn’t overpower a fine suiting fabric. Plaited belts look exceptionally great with American suits. |

You will need a plain black belt with a brass buckle as soon as you have even just a single pair of black shoes in your closet. Broad belts with silver or mat silver buckles may look good with a fashionable suit, but a real gentleman does not wear them. |
